One more thing I mentioned last time. This is the way Russell Lee approached the assignment to document a study of "Health in the Bitumenous Coal Regions" that was conducted by the Department of the Navy under the direction of Admiral Joel Boone.

Does a methodical (methodological) approach make for ethnographic photography?

RUSSELL LEE'S CHECKLIST FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

The following is a checklist which I found useful during the Boone report:

  1. Setting
  2. Housing
  3. Main Street
  4. Religion
  5. Education
  6. Transportation - movement of goods and people
  7. Architecture
  8. Social centers - interchange of ideas
  9. Everyday living - family relations
  10. recreation - saturday and Sunday
  11. Work
  12. Day and night
  13. Effect of weather
  14. Age groups of people
  15. Health and medical care
  16. Signs and symbols
  17. Sanitation
  18. memorabilia - particularly in the house

Note: Full and accurate captions are necessary. Direct quotes are very effective. Photographs should contain as much visual information as possible.
